Technology is improving every day, which means that the tech you find in our new vehicles is improving as well. So, it’s understandable if it’s hard to keep up sometimes. If you’ve come across the CVT term but aren’t sure what it means, don’t worry, we have your back. So, “What is a CVT?”, you might be asking? Learn all you need to know at Posner Park Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram FIAT, and we’ll tell you all about CVTs, how they work, and why they’re great options for certain Davenport drivers.
So, what is a CVT transmission? “CVT” is an acronym for “continuously variable transmission”. But, you could also know it by a different name like a shiftless transmission, a stepless transmission, or a pulley transmission. They’re all one in the same.
When shopping around, if you notice that a vehicle you might want comes with a CVT, you may not know what to make of it. Or, you’ll wonder how it’ll affect your vehicle’s performance. But, there’s nothing to fear!
Essentially, a CVT is a type of automatic transmission that swaps fixed-gear ratios for infinitely variable ratios, two pulleys, and an interceding chain or belt. This type of system can be found in compact, fuel-efficient vehicles, and the reason for this is because it does have a positive effect on your vehicle’s mileage.
So, how does CVT work? Regular transmissions power vehicles using a series of different gears. Continuously variable transmissions, however, are unique because they don’t have high and low gears to shift between. Instead of gear systems, CVTs use cone-shaped pulleys that are connected by an intervening belt or chain.
The fixed side remains still while the other side moves according to your speed using a hydraulic cylinder. The cylinder alters the distance between the pulley’s two sides, so the belt moves higher or lower depending on your speed. But, the good news is, shifting isn’t necessary as it’s more of an automated system.
The number one perk of a CVT is the efficiency it affords you and your vehicle. Without needing to switch between gears, the engine can operate in a way that optimizes power and fuel on your Haines City drives. But, it does have other benefits, and that’s in the fact that it’s a simpler design and fewer parts. This means that when it comes to repairs, it’s more than likely going to be easier as well as more affordable.
